Invisible garage doors

Sometimes during a home improvement project planning guidelines and regulations don't quite fit with your ideas. Silvelox, manufacturers of premium quality wooden garage doors, has been testing new versions of their doors which can be made almost invisible.

The doors are primed ready for plastering and therefore can be blended in to the surrounding walls, just like in the picture below.

Silvelox doors can be supplied ready for numerous aesthetic solutions.
In the example shown here, the door was provided with no exterior finish but was prepared for the application of plaster that would enable it to blend with the surrounding walls.

Silvelox' designers can help you achieve any effect you or your architects may want. For instance, you may wish to supply us with special windows or colonnades, and we could integrate these into the design of the door.

Choosing The Right Fire Extinguisher

A fire extinguisher can be a lifesaver. Placed near an exit, in an easy-to-grab spot, it can put out a small fire before the firefighters arrive, or at least suppress the flames while you escape.

All household extinguishers are classified A, B, or C (or a combination of these) on the label to indicate which types of fires — ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, or electrical—you can use them on. Many of the ones sold at home stores are classified A:B:C and fight all three types of fires.

The main distinction among home extinguishers is size. In most cases bigger is better, but sometimes the biggest extinguishers are too heavy to maneuver. (The weight on an extinguisher refers to the amount of chemical inside; the canister adds several more pounds.) There's also a difference between rechargeable extinguishers, with metal valves, and disposable ones, which have plastic valves. A rechargeable one will cost more, but refilling it once the pressure gauge shows that use or time has depleted the contents is still less expensive than buying a new disposable one.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends an extinguisher for each floor. But no matter how many you have, nothing can substitute for the most important safety tool: a fire plan. Make sure everyone in the family knows how to get out in a hurry, where to meet outside, and how to call 911. Even if you think you've put out the fire on your own, don't cancel that emergency call. Leave it to the pros to decide if it's really out.

Rethinking Space for Teens and Family

Checklists can become roadmaps for remodeling, adding on, or moving As a family matures, space needs change. Noise levels alter. A need for privacy arises. Entertainment choices diverge. Family gathering spots are still important, but so are places of refuge.

How To... Repair A Sewing Machine

A sewing machine is an electrical appliance that fastens things together by stitching them. Sewing machines operate and create stitches by hooking the thread in the needle around a thread in the bobbin. Feed dogs are metal feet used to pull the fabric through the sewing machine. A foot pedal or knee pedal controls the stitching speed. You can create various stitches and patterns by adjusting the controls on the machine or by using various attachments on the machine.

To lubricate a sewing machine, you must:

1. Be sure the sewing machine is unplugged.

Invasive Covers

Virginia Creeper

One caveat must always be applied when recommending ground covers, and that's to avoid the invasive ground cover. Many plants which are suitable for public areas or which grow beautifully in the wild are totally unsuitable for the residential garden and will quickly take over your entire landscape if not kept in check. A few examples follow:

Is Something Bugging You?

Cast Iron Sinks

Oops + Oops = One Big Oops

You know how two wrongs don’t make a right? Well here’s a fine example of how two boo-boos, independent of themselves, wouldn’t have caused much damage. But combined, turned into something we’ll be slapping ourselves in the forehead over for some time.

We have known for some time that our automatic sprinkler system has been going south. Well we found out why this weekend. Last week I attempted to troubleshoot the system. I even tried to manually turn the sprinklers on and off, thinking maybe they somehow got shut off or something. That did nothing. Stymied, I broke down and watered the lawn with a hose. (One of the most boring tasks in the world.)

Interactive Pillows

Interactive Pillow

Users can interact with a pillow in a specific location, which activate dynamic textile patterns in a pillow located elsewhere: by leaning against, touching, or hugging a pillow, the pattern on the other pillow activates & glows dynamically. these ambient patterns expand the vocabulary for remote communication through tangible & aesthetic interactions.

Looking Good Enough to Eat

There's nothing quite like the look on your guests' face when you serve them a salad liberally sprinkled with the world's most colorful and delicate flowers. After a period during which they were called passé, these delightful delicacies are back in vogue. Anything but new, flower cuisine dates back to ancient times in cultures from the east to the west and were particularly popular in the court of Queen Victoria of England.

Growing these beautiful yet tasty additions is not so very different from growing your average garden flower, with one or two serious caveats: for one thing, no pesticides. You don't want anything chemical and potentially dangerous to be anywhere near something you are going to eat.

Our fuzzy little friends

Popular Mechanics had a great story on the critters that love to terrorize homes. It's really funny the things that people will do to get rid of animals. Admittingly though, I have never had a problem with too many animals destroying my property. I live in a relatively metropolitan area so the only critters I have seen have been the mice and squirrels. And even then I may find a handful on my property each year and thats pretty exciting to me! As long as they are outside of the house of course. It's definitely a funny read if you have a chance to check it out.
