Keep Those Unwanted Animal Guests Away

What are wild animals looking for when they become unwelcome visitors to your yard or home? They are looking for food and for shelter.

A very easy way to minimize unwanted animal guests is to remove their food sources. Make sure that you pick up fruit or nuts that have dropped to the ground from your trees. Take in any leftover pet foods into your house at night that might entice raccoons or skunks. If you have a compost pile, make sure to not put any meat in the mix. If you can, cover the heap with a lid that is so heavy that it will be hard for enterprising animals to move. Make sure that you leave your garbage cans in your garage or cover them with airtight lids.

What can you do to keep animals out of your house or garage? Search for any holes or cracks in the foundation of your home, your house, and your roof. If you find any holes or cracks, caulk or patch them closed. Cover any vents with insect screens, or in the case of dryer vents, install protected dryer vents. Do not forget to put a chimney cap on your chimney to prevent birds from nesting there. And, remember that some animals, such as raccoons and skunks, like to dig. You might want to consider digging trench around your porch or your deck and burying some screening to prevent those mischievous animals from wreaking more havoc.

If an unwanted animal guest succeeds in gaining entrance into your home or garage, remember that the animal may bite or may be carrying diseases. Do not be reluctant to call an animal control agency for help in removing your unwanted tenant, particularly if the animal control agency has a release program.
