Balusters
|
A baluster is an architectural feature referring to an upright support bar used on the handrail of a staircase or a balcony. Often, Balusters are ornately decorated and can be constructed with many materials such as metal, wood, stone or a polymer. These types of Balusters are sometimes shaped like vase.
Balusters have been used for centuries, and were seen in the balconies of palaces in 15th century Italy and Greece. Balusters are usually used in a long series connecting a hand rail of some sort. When considering a home improvement project involving balusters you will need to calculate how many balusters you will need for the space you have. There is also the decision of best spacing for your balusters. The material you use will impact how your balustrade will look. When considering an outside job, you'll want to think about how the material will perform in the weather. If a type of wood it’s used you may need to treat it annually, as opposed to certain kinds of stone, which would weather better. As far as the design of your baluster goes the sky is the limit. You can buy pre-made molds, straight or curvy, simple or incredibly detailed and ornate. |
