How To... Repair A Sewing Machine

A sewing machine is an electrical appliance that fastens things together by stitching them. Sewing machines operate and create stitches by hooking the thread in the needle around a thread in the bobbin. Feed dogs are metal feet used to pull the fabric through the sewing machine. A foot pedal or knee pedal controls the stitching speed. You can create various stitches and patterns by adjusting the controls on the machine or by using various attachments on the machine.

To lubricate a sewing machine, you must:

1. Be sure the sewing machine is unplugged.
2. Use high quality sewing machine oil to apply a drop of oil to any moving parts. Do not oil electrical parts.

To service mechanical parts, you must:

1. Be sure the sewing machine is unplugged.
2. Use tweezers to remove the tangles of thread wound around the disks of the thread tension assembly.
3. If there are burrs or rust on the bobbin thread tension assembly, use a fine emery cloth to carefully sand them off.
4. Straighten the foot by adjusting the presser bar screw if necessary.
5. Clean the feed assembly if necessary. The presser foot, needle plate, and needle must be removed. The feed assembly must be then unfastened and removed. If there are impediments such as thread or lint, remove them.

To service the drive belt, you must:

1. Be sure the sewing machine is unplugged.
2. Remove the hand wheel cover and top cover by unscrewing screws or other fasteners.
3. Inspect the belt to see if it is worn or damaged and replace it if necessary.
4. After you reinstall the belt, tighten the motor mounting bolts appropriately. Push on the side of the belt to make sure the belt tension is correct.

bobbin thread not picking up

I have a older model singer industrial sewing machine. I was sewing and it made a popping sound. The thread was wrapped around the bobbin case, I cleaned it out but now it will not make a chain stitch. It's like the top won't pick up the bottom. I've tried everything. Any suggestions?
