About Ceiling Domes

Ceiling domes got their start in the architectural tours de force found in the ancient civilizations of Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Many of Europe’s great cathedrals incorporate them in some fashion, as do the mosques from North Africa to Mecca. Today they are used both as domestic architectural trim and as interior design elements in commercial buildings.

Many of the commercial applications utilize ceiling domes that are large enough to impact public spaces with extremely large dimensions. Some of these commercial domes have indirect lighting incorporated, making them a functional part of the room’s design as well as a decorative one. Often, domes of this size are produced from fiberglass because of its comparatively light heft and strength. Fiberglass ceiling domes have both a design and a structural element in many commercial installations and can be used for dual purposes in domestic situations as well.

About Ceiling Domes

• Ceiling domes are used in residential designs to provide a decorative element to a room and often, to highlight a hanging light fixture. A fiberglass dome with proper reinforcement included in its design can be used as the hanging support for a light fixture, provided it isn’t of tremendous weight.

• Often home remodelers will simply choose to use surface mounted ceiling domes for decorative purposes. These domes drop from the ceiling three to four inches around their outer edge and then have a concave surface in the center that rises back to ceiling height.

• A fiberglass fixture will not fade or peel once it is painted. It is a material that can be reinforced to the point that it will support a significant amount of weight and can be molded to look like many types of traditional building material. In the case of ceiling domes, it is made to look like plaster.

• The use of domes for residential applications can be many and varied. They can add elegance to a formal room such as a dining room or library; they can be decorative in a kitchen and add color and variety to the ceiling in a family room.

• Fiberglass ceiling domes can be installed with relative ease, due to their light weight. The larger ones can be unwieldy, requiring caution on a ladder – but it won’t require a black and tackle to get it in the air.

• If you are considering a fiberglass ceiling dome for your home, they area available in a variety of colors or simply primed, ready for a paint job once installed.
