Imagine this scenario. You have been living in this old home for years now and your have decided that it needs a bit of a facelift. You decide to redecorate and give it a fresh new look. You plans are extensive, involving some structural changes so you hire out for a contractor. The work begins as expected and is humming along nicely when one day your are called in by one of the builders. While punching through one of the walls and old cast iron fireplace is found. They want to know what they should do with it. A few days later, while stripping the paint from some of the walls you’re summoned again. Some old wallpaper dating back to the Victorian era has been found, again, you are asked what to do with it.

If this sounds like a strange story, believe me it isn’t. There are tales of this happening all of the time especially when it comes to remodeling older homes. People have found everything from old floor boards, Stoves, to door handles, to beautify done and ornate tiling. The sad thing is that many do not realize what these items are worth and more often than not the get chucked into the garbage.

Not everyone has the same appreciation for the old style and many today want new and modern. However, chances are there are people who would give their right arm for items such as these and will pay a good price for them.

Before you embark on a renovation project in an older home you should do your research. Find out from what era your home is and research what some of the most common features were. They may be bricked up and hidden but if you are aware of their possibility then it will be easier to decide what to do should you find something.

Try to find out what features hold the most artistic and architectural merit and which ones do not. Things like fireplaces, stoves and old door handles and hinges are quite popular. Decorative tiling is also popular and can be quite valuable as well. If you have no places for it in your design then try to find a place that does. Get in touch with reclamation yards and antique stores. Many of them will gladly take them off of your hands and give you a nice price.

Before you completely modernize your old home, do some research? Old relics from the past are constantly destroyed and discarded due to eager builders and the owner not realizing their potential worth. By giving or even selling these items to a reclamation yard, you will help to preserve some of these treasures from the past and help to keep the waste in the landfills down.
