When you purchase your ceiling fan from a home improvement or lighting store, they can provide instruction on how to install it. The manufacturer also includes installation directions. After you have selected the proper size fan for your room, make sure the package contents are complete.
One consideration is the height of your ceilings. Use flush mount or shorter down rods for lower ceilings and longer down rods for higher ceilings. The blades of the ceiling fan should be installed no lower than seven feet from the floor. If the fan is replacing a light fixture, the wiring should already be complete. If it is a new installation, you will have to install an electric box and wiring for the fan. You should consult a professional electrician for this additional installation.
The most important factor in installing a ceiling fan is that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions completely. Be sure the power is turned off before you begin installation.
First you must replace the old outlet box with one that is approved for ceiling fans. There will be a fan support with the box which has to support the moving weight of the fan. Securely fasten the new box to a brace between the ceiling joists. Some newer homes come pre-wired for ceiling fans and include the electric box and fan brace.
The mounting bracket must be removed from the fan canopy and secured to the ceiling electrical box with the lock washers and mounting screws included in the package. Then the electrical wires must be pulled through the hole of the mounting bracket. Now you must decide whether to use a flush mount or down rod installation. The directions will be included in the manufacturer’s installation instructions. First you must install the down rod into the mount. Then gently pull the lead wires from the motor through the canopy and down rod. Connect the wires to the motor assembly and then secure all parts with the hardware provided for that purpose. Using the screws and washers provided, attach the blade brackets to the fan blades.
If your lighting is not pre-installed with the fan, you must install the lighting kit. Sometimes you may need to wire the light kit yourself if you purchased it separately from the fan. Again, instructions are provided by the manufacturer.
When you follow the manufacturer’s instructions properly, you will have a decorative, useful ceiling fan installed that will save on energy costs and provide comfort.
